This position is responsible for providing advanced design support to engineers for municipal and public infrastructure projects, including water, wastewater, drainage, paving, and related improvements.
Job Duties
- Apply established company drafting and design standards, including layer naming conventions, line and character styles, and proper file and sheet organization
- Interpret and apply public agency design criteria, standard details, and specifications
- Prepare design plans, profiles, and detailed drawings in AutoCAD Civil 3D for public works projects (waterlines, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, roadway, site utilities, etc.)
- Develop construction documents including plan and profile sheets, grading and drainage plans, cross-sections, and utility layouts
- Coordinate and manage external reference files (AutoCAD xrefs), survey data, and digital design information
- Analyze engineering sketches, redlines, field data, and other input materials to determine the best approach for developing accurate and complete design drawings with minimal supervision
- Communicate progress with Project Manager(s) and engineering staff; identify issues early and propose solutions
- Maintain an organized project file structure to ensure efficient team access and collaboration
- Collaborate with permitting authorities and assist with addressing review comments and securing approvals
- Support engineers with construction document preparation, including quantity takeoffs, bid item tabulations, and support exhibits
- Ensure that all design work is accurate, constructible, and aligned with agency standards and project requirements
Requirements
- 10+ years of civil design experience with a focus on public works or municipal infrastructure
- Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Strong understanding of municipal utility design (water, wastewater, storm sewer), roadway design, and general public works standards
- Effective oral and written communication skills across all organizational levels
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- Ability to adapt to changes in project scope and assignments with short notice
- Knowledge of local agency requirements, permitting processes, and design standards preferred
